UPV welcomes AY 2015-16 incoming and returning students
To mark the beginning of academic year 2015-2016, the UP Visayas held the opening exercises at the Covered Court, Miagao campus on August 11, 2015. This was the second time that it was held in August as a result of the shift in the academic calendar.
Spearheaded by the Office of the Student Affairs (OSA), the University welcomed the new batch of first year, returning, and transferee students as well as the faculty members during the opening exercises.
In her welcome remarks, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap talked about the University hymn, which she said, every UP student should know, memorize, and take to heart as this is always being sang at the end of every program in the University. She discussed the lyrics of “UP Beloved,” and “UP Naming Mahal” using the official and the unofficial version.
With this year’s program theme, “Moving UP, Moving Together,” Yap said as there is no other way but up, “we must be guided by something that is capable of touching the heart and soul of every UP student and alumnus and this refers to no other than our University hymn.”
“As we move up and move together, let us be reminded that we are here as true iskolars ng bayan, and as true tagapaglingkod ng bayan we are here to study for our country and our people,” she concluded.
The UPV campuses in Iloilo City and Miagao, faculty members, REPS, unit heads, and staff in the University were introduced to the new students through audio visual presentations. OSA Director Ruben M. Gamala presented the new set of USC officers for AY 2015-2016 and were immediately inducted by Chancellor Rommel A. Espinosa.
A true-blooded UPV alumna, Dr. Yasmin Primavera-Tirol, BS in Fisheries (1992), MS in Fisheries Biology (1999), and Ph.D. in Fisheries (2015) was the event’s keynote speaker. Tirol shared her personal experiences, the realities, and challenges of being an Iskolar ng Bayan. She also gave words of advice towards the learning process. Tirol told the students not to be afraid, to make their choices, to wonder, to have fun, to stay humble, to have focus, to endure and finish what they have started, and most importantly to find their purpose.
Ms. Aserina Yvonne Baladhay, a fourth year BS Accountancy student, and Ms. Noreen Beth Alberto, a first year BS Chemical Engineering student, gave messages in behalf of their peers.
