UPHSI student wins in regional essay writing contest

Vanessa Joy Denoman, a senior student at the UP High School in Iloilo, College of Arts and Sciences, U.P. Visayas bested other high school contestants from Western Visayas and Negros Island regions during an on-the-spot essay writing contest held at the Hua Siong College of Iloilo on September 4, 2015.

 The contest was sponsored by the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). With the theme “The Filipino Reader in the Era of ASEAN Integration,” the competition aims to instil in the young Filipino learners the love for books; develop among the students essential reading and literacy skills; and promote libraries in the country.

Denoman received a cash prize and a certificate of recognition. Her winning piece will be the region’s official entry to the national contest to be held during the 81st National Book Week celebration on November 24 to 30, 2015. She was coached by Prof. Early Sol Gadong.
