UPV profs to co-author YAFS4 regional papers
Two faculty members of UP Visayas were invited by the Demographic Research and Development Foundation (DRDF) to conduct further analysis of the 2013 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS4) data during a workshop held on September 3-5, 2015 at the Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City.
Prof. Cristabel Parcon of the College of Arts and Sciences and Prof. Pierce Docena from Tacloban College will serve as co-authors of the papers for Western Visayas and Eastern Visayas, respectively. DRDF aims to produce 17 regional papers on topics identified by the different regional offices of the Commission on Population (POPCOM). These papers are expected to be completed in December 2015.
For three days, Parcon and Docena joined other regional writers in conceptualizing their papers, doing preliminary analysis of the YAFS4 data, and presenting their outputs with the guidance of assigned mentors from DRDF. Parcon's paper is about the smoking behavior of the youth in Western Visayas, while Docena will write on the type of marital union among Eastern Visayan youth. YAFS4 data show that Region VI ranked third among all the regions in terms of the number of youth who smoke. On the other hand, YAFS4 data also reveal that Region VIII is second highest in terms of proportion of youth who are currently “living-in”.
The YAFS4 is the fourth of a series of cross-sectional surveys conducted on the Filipino youth with age range of 15-24 years old conducted since 1982 by the University of the Philippines Population Institute and the DRDF. The workshop on further analysis of YAFS4 data was funded by the POPCOM.
