RELO introduces English teaching materials for Iloilo City teachers
Introducing a collection of resources for teachers of English – this was what had been accomplished during the “Introduction to the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the US Embassy Manila” on September 30, 2015 at the audio-visual room of the Graduate and Continuing Education Bldg., UP Visayas, Iloilo City.
Prof. Susan Mila Alvarez-Tosalem, Chair of the Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) introduced the two speakers that talked about the various resources available from Embassy’s website which can easily be downloaded. The first is Whitney Mirts, Regional English Language Officer for the US Embassy in Manila, a former TESOL professor and who received her MS in Applied Linguistics from the Long Island University, Brooklyn. The other is Cherylle Catacutan also from RELO, a former English teacher and teacher trainee Manila who earned her Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication from UP Manila.
The participants, who are mostly English teachers from several colleges and universities in Iloilo City and some graduate students of English language courses, were given information kits containing a sample copy the English Teaching Forum journal.
From among the resources that were introduced, the “Activate: Games for Learning American English” was the most appreciated by the participants as it creates an atmosphere of learning in a fun way, is more student-centered and participative in approach.
Prof. Celia Parcon, Chair of the Division of Professional Education, CAS, thanked the RELO personnel for sharing the wealth of materials for English teaching available at the website: americanenglish.state.gov. She also thanked Prof. Mary Oveta Villareal, Faculty-in-Charge of the UPV Language Program for coordinating the event in cooperation with her office and the Division of Humanities.
