3rd Title of Suguidanon (Epic) of Panay launched
The third title in the series of books on the Suguidanon (Epics) of Panay entitled “Derikaryong Pada” was launched on November 7, 2015 at the Dream Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
UP Press Director J. Neil Garcia presented the book to Dr. Alicia P. Magos, Chief Editor of the Suguidanon Epics. The event was part of the Performatura, a performance festival in celebration of Philippine Literature that was held in CCP from November 6-8, 2015.
The third in the series of 13 titles of the Suguidanon of Panay which will be published by the UP press tells of a “Derikaryong Pada” a gold medallion of unequalled quality that was given as a “tuos” or pledge for Labaw Donggon to marry Matan-ayon, two of the main characters in the epic. However, a conflict arose, when another man Sinagnayan, tried to pursue Matan-ayon and challenged the pledge. It was chanted by Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardees, Federico Caballero and Romulo Caballero.
The ceremony began with a presentation on the Suguidanon given by Dr. Alicia P. Magos, UPV Professor Emeritus and Anna Razel L. Ramirez, researcher and over-all coordinator for publications of the Suguidanon Epics. A presentation and running show of the animation on Suguidanon produced by Liby Norman Limoso and Rosalie Zerrudo was also presented.
Suguidanon is a long narrative delivered in the form of chants and tells stories about romance and battles in a maritime setting. Probably one of the longest in Southeast Asia, the publication of the Suguidanon was made possible through the support of UP Visayas administration and the University of the Philippines System.
