APO and UP Visayas adopt a barangay
The Alpha Phi Omega (APO) Alumni Council of North America (ACNA), through the Alpha Phi Omega Kappa Gamma (UPV chapter), and UP Visayas, partnered to adopt Barangay Malagyan in Miagao Iloilo as the recipient of a year-long Feeding and Nutrition Program for children, Well-Baby Clinic, Medical Clinic and Dental Services both for adults and children which will be conducted at the Barangay Malagyan Health Center.
A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between ACNA, UPV and Brgy Malagyan on December 18, 2015 at its Health Center and the program itself will start on January 16, 2016. ACNA President Alexander Garcia was represented by Zita Balagot and Rosemarie Mesina (Project Auditor and Evaluator, respectively).
UP Visayas Chancellor, Dr. Rommel A. Espinosa signed for the university, Prof. Pepito Fernandez, Jr. for APO, and Brgy. Captain Rose Mary F. Galvan, for Barangay Malagyan. Prof. Fernandez of the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, is the faculty adviser of the APO Kappa Gamma chapter.
Also present during the signing were Vice-Chancellor for Planning and Development, Dr. Evelyn T. Belleza; Jonathan Gonzales, representative of the APO Kappa Gamma Alumni Association; and Isaiah Matthew Herbo, current Grand Chancellor, APO Kappa Gamma-UPV. Also present were the barangay officials.
Brgy. Captain Galvan, who welcomed the guests, expressed her appreciation to APO and UPV for choosing Malagyan as the beneficiary of the Project. In a short message, Prof. Fernandez emphasized that APO is an international service organization known for its charitable and humanitarian services. For this project it will focus on assisting and promoting the welfare of the local citizens specifically in the areas of medical, dental, health, and nutrition of children and adults.
APO will provide financial support and manpower for the project while UPV will likewise provide additional manpower through its Health Service Unit.
Chancellor Espinosa, who considers himself an adopted son of Miagao, commended the project and emphasized that UP is a public service university who is very much involved in community development.
