SoTech ROARS at 30
“This year’s theme, ‘SoTech ROARs at 30,” is not a brag but rather an expression of how SoTech relates to the UPV community,” said Prof. Emeliza Lozada, Dean of the School of Technology during the opening program for its 30th foundation anniversary on February 9, 2016 at the School’s AVR, Miagao campus.
The Dean went on to explain that ROAR is an acronym. The R stands for resiliency, referring to how SoTech has been resilient in its growth pains after separating from its mother unit, the College of Arts and Sciences in 1986.
“SoTech is like the appendix unit of UPV and has to navigate through rough waters but for 30 years, it has withstood the challenges,” the she pointed out.
The Dean added that the O means openness to opportunities. “Opportunities are not at all times meant to be grabbed, rather SoTech has learned to wait for the proper time with an open mind,” she emphasized.
Lozada went on to say that the A stands for active collaboration, crediting the pillars of SoTech for their tireless efforts in collaborating with various partners that contributed to the Schools’ growth and development. “We are now enjoying the fruits of their active efforts,” she stressed.
She said that the R means “reaching for greater heights. It is obvious that with optimism and cooperation, SoTech will soar in time.”
Lastly, she pointed out that S stands for service to the people. “SoTech’s lofty ideal is to mould its graduates to live a life of meaning and purpose – that is – to serve and be useful.”
The opening program was followed by the recognition of student achievers in the morning while a lecture forum on Food Security and Protection by Dr. Alonzo Gabriel was held in the afternoon. The five-day commemoration from February 9-13, 2016 also included fun activities mostly for the students and the faculty as well that included color splash, tournament, clash of minds, film festival and padayaw which is a showcase of talents of the students.
SoTech has always had a strong alumni group and the alumni homecoming on February 12 afforded the opportunity for the School to touch base with its graduates. The SoTech Night on February 13 was a fitting conclusion to the milestone celebration.
