UPV Library receives book donations
“To the people of Panay, who continue to provide me with substantial inspiration and to Mother Rosario, who continues to inspire them.” This is the dedication stated in Mr. Matthew J. Riley’s book, The Life and times of Mother Rosario Arroyo, servant of God (2015),” one of his works published through the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines, Molo, Iloilo City.
Mr. Matthew J. Riley is a native of Antioch, California, and has served as lecturer in California State University East Bay. In the Philippines, Mr. Riley resides in Tabuc Suba, Jaro, Iloilo City. His appreciation and love of the Philippine history and culture is exemplified in his recent projects / researches, which focus on Panay and the Panayanons’ way of life. He has been with U.P. Visayas as lecturer in History since the 2nd semester, 2013-2014 and up to the present handling courses related to Cultural History of the Philippines, World Civilizations, Ancient, Medieval and Modern Europe, Russia and Latin America.
It may be quite ironic that through the eyes of a foreigner the Filipino history and culture is appreciated and internalized. He initiated a book drive from his alma mater, the California State University East Bay, where 162 books (on philosophy, history, ethics, and religion) and 186 journals (on American History) were sent by Ms. Linda Ivey, Department of History Chair.
Mr. Logan Wangsgard, another donor from the United States, sent 572 volumes of books in November and December 2015 through Dr. Rosalie and Mr. Bruce Hall’s book drive. The books were mostly on political science, international relations, American history and politics, and other areas such as psychology and religion.
Dr. Rosalie A. Hall started her book drive in May 2001, and from then the UPV Library has been a constant recipient of book donations from varied donors, both local and foreign individuals / institutions. Hall, a well-travelled scholar, political scientist and faculty member of the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, never missed to include the UPV Library in her advocacy to share and improve knowledge through book donations.
Moreover, these book donations helped the UPV Library to hold extension services in nearby schools, which has also been made easier with the assistance and connections of Mr. Hall, a Rotarian. The recipients of these books include: Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College (NIPSC), Southern Iloilo Polytechnic State College (SIPC-ISATU), Palaca-Damilisan National High School, Alejandro Firmeza Memorial National High School, and San Jose National High School in Miagao, Iloilo.
