GDP Director gets commendation in the 6th Global Symposium on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries
Dr. Mary Barby P. Badayos-Jover, Director of UP Visayas’ Gender and Development Program (UPV-GDP) was chosen as one of the highly commended presenters during the closing ceremonies of the 6th Global Symposium on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries (GAF) on August 6, 2016, at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), in Bangna District, Bangkok, Thailand. The Global Symposium was part of the 11th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum held on August 3-6, 2016 in the same venue.
“Engendering security in fisheries and aquaculture” was the theme of the symposium. Badayos-Jover’s presentation on "Security in Adversity: Coastal Women's Agency in the Aftermath of Haiyan” discussed the coastal community women’s situated knowledge by highlighting their experiences of disaster and corresponding resiliency. The presentation also focused on the opportunity that post-disaster contexts provide for coastal women’s agency and empowerment and emphasized the need for institutions to harness such opportunity. “Otherwise,” she said, “women will remain marginalized in reconstruction processes following coastal disasters. “
Badayos-Jover also participated in the first GAF 101 Training Workshop on Theorizing Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries Research, which was held on August 5, a day before the symposium. The said workshop was participated in by representatives of various fisheries-related institutions worldwide. (Source:
