UPV unveils perspectives of the RRC and new SoTech buildings
August 22, 2016 marked the unveiling of the perspectives of the Regional Research Center (RRC) and the new School of Technology (SoTech) buildings at the UP Visayas Miagao Campus. UP President Alfredo E. Pascual, Vice-President for Academic Affairs Gisela P. Concepcion, Vice-President for Planning and Finance Joselito G. Florendo, and Faculty Regent Philip Ian P. Padilla graced the event.
The program began with a prayer followed by the singing of the Philippine national Anthem . Two SoTech students, Roi Lagon and Roy Palmares, then interpreted a composo written by Palanca awardee, Professor Alice Tan-Gonzales of the Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences.
UPV Chancellor Rommel A. Espinosa welcomed the UP System officials as well as the UPV officials present namely, Vice-Chancellor for Research and Extension Ricardo P. Babaran, Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Emilia Santos-Yap, Vice-Chancellor for Administration Nestor G. Yunque, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Planning and Development, Prof. Ruben M. Gamala, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences Dean Crispino A. Saclauso, College of Management Dean Mary Ann T. Gumban, and School of Technology Dean Emeliza C. Lozada.
According to VCRE Babaran, “The RRC is envisioned as a hub for research in fisheries and aquatic sciences, not only in the Visayas region and in the entire country, but in the Southeast Asian region as well.” He further said that he looks forward to a center that has state-of-the art equipment to be used in the conduct of relevant and critical research.
The new SoTech building will cater to the growing number of undergraduate students enrolling in Food Technology and Chemical Engineering courses. Dean Lozada hopes that this will allow for a more conducive educational environment for students, faculty and staff.
Following the unveiling of the building perspectives, was the presentation of Unleashing Knowledge from the Pillars and Exhibit at the Administration Building lobby. VCRE Babaran said that the project is a multi-media display that showcases UPV’s research initiatives in more understandable formats for the general public.
In his message, Pres. Pascual encouraged the faculty, REPs and students to take the initiative and be innovative in their research endeavours. He also thanked the UPV community for setting a research ideal to which others may strive for. Vice-President Concepcion likewise said, “These endeavours are all possible when we turn our jobs into our passions.”
After the program, the guests were invited to partake of the fisheries food products developed through UPV research projects as well as view the exhibit on the completed and ongoing research projects of the different units in UPV. (By: Rey Alexander V. Palmares)
