Graduate orientation dares students to contribute to national development
“…be steadfast, remain focused, persevere, be determined and work hard for the kind of education that will make you proud. Graduating with a Tatak UPV education… will demand a lifetime of service to our people and nation. This is what the oblation symbolizes, to dedicate ourselves totally and unselfishly to a higher cause greater than ourselves and to make a difference in the lives of our countrymen.”
With this message, UPV Chancellor Rommel Espinosa hoped to inspire the incoming graduate students as well as the returning ones during the Graduate Orientation Program on September 10, 2016, UPV auditorium, Iloilo City.
Sharing about the UPV graduate student experience, Ms. Abegail Bayona, (Master in Education – English as a Second Language II) said that doing graduate studies in UPV is far from being a piece of cake, sleep would be a luxury for them as they work and study at the same time and learning is tough because one is exposed to a whole new world.
“Studying in UP made me realize that there is so much to do for the Philippines,” she pointed out, imbibing the sense of nationalism and service to the country that the University instils in its students.
Incoming 1st year student for the Master of Management (Business Management) program, Ramela Contrevida, a medical doctor by profession, said that she enrolled in UP to learn something new. She added that combining graduate school and working full time will be tough, but she is determined to learn something new.
Meanwhile, Faculty Regent, Philip Ian Padilla urged the graduate students to pursue research as a means to contribute to the country’s national development.
The orientation also included some highlights of the rules and policies for graduate students through a power point presentation by Dr. Vivian Azucena-Topor, the current Director of the Graduate Program Office.
In addition, the Graduate Students Association Officers 2015-2016 were introduced. Before Office of the Students Affairs Director, Prof. Ruben Gamala gave the closing remarks, it was announced that there will be an election for the new set of officers for Academic Year 2016-2017.
