Chemistry prof wins best paper award in Palawan Symposium
Prof. Concepcion P. Ponce, a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas won the Best Paper Award (Oral Presentation, Professional Category) during the 3rd Palawan Research Symposium (National Research Forum on Palawan Sustainable Development) held at the Citystate Asturias Hotel, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan on September 15, 2016. “Towards Innovative Environmental Research for Sustainability and Climate Resiliency” is the theme of the symposium.
The winning paper, “Mining Seafood Wastes for Valuable Materials,” is an output of a brainstorming session with experts at the Impact Center, University of Toronto. The said session was conducted to come up with projects suited to the limited resources in the Philippines, but would still generate high impact to society. The study involved conversion of fishery wastes resources into high value nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots, which have valuable applications in diverse industries especially in solar cells, bioimaging and catalysis.
Ponce just returned from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK Canada where she completed all the requirements for a Ph.D. in Chemistry degree and is just waiting for her convocation in October 2016. (By: Enrique N. Legaspi III)
