Marking 70 years of providing UP brand of education in Iloilo
It was the Municipal Board of Iloilo that made representations to the University of the Philippines to open a UP brand of education in the province. On December 18, 1945 the Board authorized a resolution for the opening of a branch of UP in Iloilo, donating what was then the Iloilo City Hall to be its site. In 1947 the University of the Philippines Iloilo College (UPIC) opened its doors in Iloilo City.
UPIC started with a Lower Division for 3rdand 4thyear high school students and an Upper Division for 1st year and second year college levels. Back then, those who finished the two years of study were given an Associate in Arts certificate and had to go to UP Diliman, other UP units or other higher education institutions to earn or finish a baccalaureate degree.
Seven years after, UPIC earned the status of being a full-fledged college and was renamed UP College Iloilo (UPCI) in 1954; offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as a four-year high school education through the UP High School in Iloilo.
Fast forward to 2017, UPCI now renamed UP Visayas, boasts of not one but three campuses located in Iloilo City, Miagao, Iloilo and Tacloban City. Its five degree-granting units continue to offer the UP brand of education marked by a high standard of academic excellence from its undergraduate to graduate programs in fisheries education, the arts and sciences, environment and technology, and management.
On February 20-24, 2017, UP Visayas will celebrate 70 years of UP Presence in Iloilo. The week-long celebration will recognize the outstanding performance of the faculty and staff through the UPV Chancellor’s Award. It will also honor those who have served the University for 25 years and those who has retired from service.
The activities will also include a wide variety of events such as exhibits, lectures, research poster presentations, debates, and forums. These activities cove topics on business, leadership, food technology, fisheries, and the arts and sciences.
Community breakfasts, boodle lunch, brunch and dinner, yoga sessions, film showings, plays, music festivals, food fairs, alumni homecoming, and talent fests are also thrown into the mix.
The College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the College of Management, the School of Technology and the University Student Council are the organizers of the various activities for the event. A steering committee was formed to oversee the preparations for the whole celebrations.
As the national university of the country, UP continues to shape the minds that shape nation. UP Visayas will continue in its role of bringing the UP brand of education not only in Iloilo but in the Visayas region.
