Cook off showcases UPV’s culinary skills
It has become an event that is looked forward to by the UP Visayas community as part of the Women’s Month celebration.
This year’s Cook Off, dubbed “Chopped: UPV Edition,” had six competing groups that showcased their culinary skills during the contest on March 9, 2017 at the grounds of the administration building, Miagao campus.
The contest was open to academic groups, student organizations and the UPV faculty and staff who should enter as a group with three members. Only the first six groups to register first can join the contest.
Group 4 from the Office of Student Affairs was judged the winner with their entry, “Popeye’s Chicken” and received a cash prize of P 3,000.00. The rest of the groups each received consolation prizes of P 1,000.00. They are: Group 1 from the School of Technology (BS Food Technology students) with their menu: “Chicken a la Mama”; Group 2 from the SOTECH Student Council with their entry: “Fishroom”; Group 3 from the College of Arts and Sciences with their entry “Fish Fillet ala CAS with a Twist”; Group 5 from the central administration with their menu:“Fish Sprikisteak and FishBook;” and Group 6 – from the Campus Development and Maintenance Office with the menu – “Chicken Adobo and Sarsiado with Zuchini Salad.”
Each group brought their own charcoal-fired stove (kalan), pail, basin and dipper, cooking pans, knives, chopping board, measuring cups, spoons, mixing bowls, cooking utensils, and cleaning supplies. They were required to prepare an entrée and plated out a serving for the three judges.
Patterned after the TV show “Chopped", a basket with five required ingredients was supplied to each team and must be incorporated into the dish.
The winning entrée was scored according to food safety (proper attire and hygienic practices), culinary skills, flavour, and presentation. A boodle lunch that followed drew a large crowd from the UPV community.
