UPV participates in the China-ASEAN FEN president forum, workshop
UP Visayas participated in the China-ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN) President Forum and Workshop on Marine and Aquatic Technology hosted by Ocean University of China (OUC) on April 11-14, 2017 at Qingdao, Shandong, China.
UPV, as an Associate Member of ASEAN-FEN, through the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) was represented by Prof. Encarnacion Emilia Santos-Yap, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and Prof. Crispino A. Saclauso, Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences..
Saclauso said “the membership of UPV in the ASEAN FEN augurs well with its internationalization program. To sustain our international network, UPV as a constituent unit (CU) has to allocate resources to meet its commitments and to enable open and constant dialogues with our partners for mutual recognition towards enhanced mobility of manpower across Asia and the world.”
Yap delivered a report on the topic “The University of the Philippines Visayas: Facing the Challenges of the Times” at the President Forum on marine and fisheries education, research, and industry with speakers from other ASEAN universities.
The conference was aimed to foster multi-level and all-around maritime cooperation by discussing the aquatic technology cooperation, building a platform for technological innovation and cooperation and by sharing marine and aquatic technology achievements among China, ASEAN, East Asia and European Union.
More than a hundred scholars, presidents, deans, and experts from 24 leading universities in fisheries and aquaculture from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and China and three other institutions participated and attended the conference to enhance educational research and cooperation in the context of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. It was also attended by four (4) regional organizations, namely ASEAN FEN, China-ASEAN Center for Joint Research and Promotion of Marine Aquaculture Technology, Consortium of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Sciences, and European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform.
The conference was organized and sponsored by OUC, Qingdao Municipal People’s Government, ASEAN-China Center, ASEAN FEN, and China-ASEAN Center for Joint Research and Promotion of Marine Aquaculture Technology.
