Pioneer UPV alumna touches lives throughout generations

Pioneer UPIC (University of the Philippines Iloilo College) faculty and UP alumna, and first UP Visayas Chancellor, Dr. Dionisia A. Rola, continues to serve as an outstanding example and inspiration to UP alumni even of the new generation. As recognition for her decades of exemplary achievements and contributions in the academe, in the government, and in civic and professional organizations, the UP Alumni Association (Iloilo Chapter) will bestow the Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Rola during the UP Alumni & Faculty Homecoming Dinner and Awards Night to be held on August 27, 2017 at Diversion21 Hotel, Iloilo City.

Rola is an outstanding educator, administrator and scholar. She is an Associate in Arts 1941 and BS in Education 1947 graduate of UP Diliman, finishing with High Honors and as Magna Cum Laude, respectively. She also holds a Master of Arts in English degree (with honors) from the University of Melbourne in 1952, a Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago in 1960, and a Rockefeller post-doctoral research fellowship in 1965, among others.

Throughout her career in the academe, Rola has served in non-teaching capacity as student organization adviser, administrative committee chair, and academic administrator. Outside the university, she served as representative for the education sector in various committees, government agencies, and non-government institutions. She is also a strong force in the foundation and fostering of cultural heritage and art in the university and in the national scene.

Alongside Rola, the Outstanding Professional Award will also be given to Joselito F. Villaruz (BS Biology 1987, UPV) in the field of education, Raul L. Cordenillo (High School 1992, UPHSI) in the field of social sciences, and Alex Escolastico L. Cerrillo (High School 1972, UPHSI) in the field of health and medical profession.

This year’s homecoming will be a 3-day festivity. The celebration will open on August 25, 2017 with the homecoming mass, followed by various activities such as a book launch, brunch for the alumni, election of the UPAA Board of Directors, Golden Lunch for retired faculty and staff, and an Afternoon Disco. Run UP! 7 42K Night Run will kick-off in UPV Miagao at 10:00PM.

Run UP! 7 Fun Run with 3K and 5K categories will be on the next day, August 26, at SM City Iloilo. Bingo sessions, blood drive, reunion disco, and The Spirit of ‘67 barn dance will also be held.

The celebration will be capped by the 2017 Homecoming Dinner and Awards Night on August 27. Pioneer and senior jubilarians will be honored, together with the awardees. It will be another fun-filled three days for the UPV alumni.
