UP 2 UP Marathon: The biggest Run UP ever
In honor of “70 years of UP Presence in Iloilo,” the UP Alumni Association – Iloilo Chapter (UPAA-Iloilo Chapter), in cooperation with the UP Silak and Silab alumni, organized the first and biggest “Run UP” ever, held on August 25, 2017.
Now on its 7th year, “Run UP” staged the “UP 2 UP Marathon” that took off at 10:00 pm from the main campus of UP Visayas in Miagao, Iloilo to Iloilo City where UP was first established in 1947.
The “UP 2 UP Marathon” featured the full 42K event for men and women and a relay category consisting of 4 runners. A side event was held the next day, August 26, at SM City South point for 3 and 5K distances.
It is no small feat to organize a full marathon. Atty. Gaudioso “Didoy” Geduspan II and Dr. Ray Alindong, Chair of Run UP7 and Overall Coordinator of Run UP7, respectively, expressed their utmost appreciation for the support of the UPV administration, the Municipalities of Miagao, Guimbal, Tigbauan and, Oton and the Iloilo City government. Because of their invaluable assistance, the 42K runners ran the course with all the logistical provisions in place.
The “UP 2 UP Marathon” was the idea of Mary Lyncen Fernandez, current Chair of the UPV Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Committee. She has been selling the idea of a full marathon from UPV Miagao to UPV Iloilo city back in 2015 when the UPAA – Iloilo Chapter had its first race event in the Miagao campus – the UP Duathlon held on May 2.
That it was finally done in 2017 that coincided with the “70 years of UP Presence in Iloilo,” was indeed fitting and timely.
