UPV-CM awarded EIDR Cycle 8 research grant

Dr. Cheryl Joy Fernandez of the College Management (CM) received a research grant from the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) - Emerging Interdisciplinary Research Program (EIDR) Cycle 8 – the first UPV-led EIDR project since the research program started in 2011. Her research project entitled, “Promoting sustainable tourism development of small islands in the Visayas,” intends to characterize current conditions, gaps, and opportunities relating to sustainable tourism development and to develop site-specific strategies for collaborative sustainable tourism development for small island communities.

It is consistent with the UP system-funded EIDR’s thrust to implement “innovative, interdisciplinary, inter-CU research programs and projects that generate fundamentally new knowledge contributing to the understanding of natural phenomena, and with beneficial applications.”

Tourism has been the mainstay of the Philippines’ economic and development agenda. Although, characterized by slow growth and decline in some years, the Philippine’s international and domestic tourism have continued to boost regional economies, providing alternative income opportunities to socio-disadvantaged sectors.

The co-proponents of this interdisciplinary research are Dr. Harold Monteclaro (CFOS), Dr. Rowena Paz Gelvezon (CM), Dr. Rosalie Arcala Hall (CAS), Dr. Joy Lizada (CM), Dr. Reynold Tan (CM), and Prof. Duvince Zhalimar Dumpit (CM). Joining the UPV team are Dr. Analyn Amores of UP Baguio, Dr. Maoying Wu of Zhejiang University and Dr. Michelle Esparon of James Cook University in Australia.
