Japanese students attend classes in CFOS
Two undergraduate students of the Kagoshima University (KU), Japan, participated in the student exchange program of UP Visayas (UPV), through the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS).
Mr. Yo Watanabe and Ms. Rikako Tanaka, both third-year BS Fisheries and BS Agriculture students, respectively attended lectures and laboratory classes at the CFOS, UPV Miagao campus from September 10 to 27, 2018. These courses are on fish health management handled by Prof. Erlinda Lacierda and on fisheries resource assessment of Prof. Gerald Quinitio.
The Japanese students found the immersion experience a very good opportunity for them to learn from other professors and students outside KU.
Watanabe said that the professors were very accommodating and considerate trying to explain their lessons in a manner that he and Tanaka can understand since they had a hard time understanding English, which is the medium of instruction here in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Tanaka found their classmates kind and friendly. She said that she is excited to share with her classmates, family, and friends her experience being an exchange student in UPV when she goes back to Japan.
The student exchange program is under the Joint Declaration of Cooperation and Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Exchange Programme for Students between the UP and KU.
The students were no longer new to UPV. Both attended a short-term English language training of the Language Program Office, College of Arts and Sciences, this University last year.
