1st Philippine mussel congress slated

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), through the support of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (PCAARRD-DOST) will hold the 1st Philippine Mussel Congress on October 25, 2018 at Diversion 21 Hotel, Iloilo City.

With the theme, “Bigger and Safer Mussels for Every Juan,” the congress will gather various mussel stakeholders from the private and government sectors, non-government organizations (NGOs), academe, and research institutions in the country to discuss issues about the industry. The conference also aims to share updates on improving competitiveness of mussels in the market. Specifically, it seeks to: 1) disseminate the results/findings of the various researches which addressed the mussel industry strategic plans under the PCAARRD-DOST’s National Mussel Science and Technology Program and other research initiatives; 2) showcase the different mussel products and technologies; 3) provide updates on the present status of the mussel industry; and 4) conduct consultation with the industry stakeholders.

“The conduct of the 1st National Mussel Congress in Iloilo City is the best venue to disseminate the findings of the various researches on mussel. It will also attract more industry players and investors to pursue the commercialization following good practices in the hatchery/nursery, grow-out and postharvest of mussels,” said Dr. Carlos C. Baylon, Program Leader, National Mussel S&T Program and chair of the 1st Philippine Mussel Congress.

Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will grace the event as the Keynote Speaker.

The congress will feature products and posters exhibits and scientific sessions on mussel hatchery and nursery; mussel grow-out; and mussel post-harvest, management and policy studies.

For those who are interested to participate, registration fee is Php 1,200.00 inclusive of meals (lunch and 2 snacks) and kits.
