To have a better pool of news and feature writers for UP Visayas – this was the reason for the workshop organized by the Information and Publications Office (IPO) for several employees on December 7, 2018, Iloilo City campus.
“With only two writers at the IPO for the entire UPV, we need all the help we can get to be able to report on all the teaching activities, research and community engagements of all our colleges as well as that of our various research and extension offices,” said Anna Razel Ramirez, Director of IPO as she welcomed the participants.
Philippine Daily Inquirer Visayas Correspondent, Hazel Villa, who was the resource person, took the participants through exercises in news and feature writing.
Before making them write she discussed the common style guides on the use of capitalization, abbreviation, punctuation, spelling, numerals and other questions of language use. She likewise reviewed the participants on how to place the theme, write the lead, body, and ending in news and feature write ups.
Villa also judged the best five writers in news and feature writing. They are as follows:
1st – Jessie Labiste, Jr - Division of Professional Education, College of Arts and Science,
2nd – Mary Li Nulada – Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Extension,
3rd – Shirley Golez – Institute if Marine Fisheries and Oceanology, College of Fisheries,
4th – Teresa Hortillo - Office of Student Affairs, and
5th – Jo Ann Bedia – Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Administration.
1st – Jessie Labiste, Jr. – Division of Professional Education, CAS
2nd – Czar Ian Angel Esquivel – Teaching and Learning Resource Center
3rd – Ellaine Rae Daguman – Office of the Chancellor
4th – Zyreen Lou Faramiran – Office of Student Affairs
The organizers are hopeful that with this workshop, events in UPV, particularly its accomplishments across colleges, offices and units, will be widely reported.
