IFPDS conducts handicraft training for used nets


The Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies, College of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas conducted a handicraft training from ‘used fine mesh nets’ on October 25-26, 2017 at UP Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo.

Twenty-three participants from the six municipalities Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal, Miagao, San Joaquin, and Dumangas, Iloilo attended the training. Two of the women participants who were previously trained in doing flowers from discarded fine mesh net assisted in training the other participants. The first day was spent doing patterns and making flower designs.

UPV celebrates IP Month


Masked with some of the attitudes, languages, and culture left by our former colonizers, the Philippines is still blessed with the diverse and rich culture of the different indigenous groups all over our country. The colorful and rich traditions of our country continue to seep through in today’s society.

This can be attributed to the efforts of the various government offices, NGOs, and Indigenous Groups (IPs) themselves to keep these cultures and traditions still shining; one example of which, is the celebration of Indigenous Peoples Month every October pursuant to Proclamation No.1906, s. 2009.

Turn-over of Chancellorship



UPV's 9th Chancellor Dr. Rommel A. Espinosa turned over the UPV Chancellorship to the 10th Chancellor Dr. Ricardo P. Ricardo Babaran in a simple ceremony at the UPV Administration Building in Miagao, Iloilo on 8 November 2017.
The oath-taking of the New Vice Chancellors: Dr. Gay Defiesta (OVCAA), Prof. Mary Ann Gumban (OVCA), Prof. Martin G. Genodepa (OVCPD), and Dr. Rolly Fuentes (OVCRE) also took place during the event which was attended by the members of the UPV faculty, staff and students.

UPV 98.97% passing rate in the 2017 fisheries technologist licensure exam

Ninety-six (96) out of 97 examinees of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas BS Fisheries program passed the October 2017 Fisheries Technologist Licensure Examination with a passing rate of 98.97%, making UPV the only top performing school in the said board exam.

Moreover, seven (7) UPV examinees made it to the top 10. Jerwin G. Baure placed 2nd with a rating of 86.75%, Byrille Tiara M. Galon, 4th place (86.00%), Hazel Coleen G. Gaya, 5th place (85.25%), Michael Andre D. Treyes , 6th place (85.00%), Efren E. Temario, 7th place (84.75%), Paul Filip A. Depra, 8th place (84.50%), and Alvin H. Bantiquete, 9th place (84.25%).

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that 479 out of 1,399 examinees passed the licensure examination. Date and venue for the oath taking ceremony of the successful examinees will be announced later.
