CFOS Scientist/Researcher attends short training at PERDC, Texas A & M University, USA

Dr. Erlinda S. Ganzon-Naret, Scientist 1 and Univ. Researcher of the Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences attended the training course on Aquaculture Feed Extrusion and Nutrition and Feed Management on August 20-25, 2017 held at the Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas, USA. The training was organized by the Process Engineering Research and Development Center (PERDC). The Alumni Grant was given by, Education for Nature (EFN) by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

This training course was attended by sixteen (16) participants coming from nine (9) different countries. Series of lectures were held at the Rudder Tower, Texas A & M University. The lectures primarily focused on the review of the current practices for the preparation of aquaculture feeds, aquaculture nutrition, and feed management practices.

The trainings also exposed the participants to multiple demonstrations on the use of different types of extruders, drying and cooling systems for aquaculture feeds, and use of NIR (Near Infra-Red) Analyzer on ingredients. Participants were also oriented with Aqua feed vacuum infusion, coating of aqua feeds, and the most recent processing technologies for effective selection and operation with the use extruders. UP 2 UP Marathon: The biggest Run UP ever


In honor of “70 years of UP Presence in Iloilo,” the UP Alumni Association – Iloilo Chapter (UPAA-Iloilo Chapter), in cooperation with the UP Silak and Silab alumni, organized the first and biggest “Run UP” ever, held on August 25, 2017.

Now on its 7th year, “Run UP” staged the “UP 2 UP Marathon” that took off at 10:00 pm from the main campus of UP Visayas in Miagao, Iloilo to Iloilo City where UP was first established in 1947.

UPV screens 'Tsukiji Wonderland’



More than 200 high school students coming from 10 public and private high schools from the Municipality of Miag-ao flocked and watched the free film screening of “Tsukiji Wonderland” at the Audio Visual Room, Pidlaoan Hall, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas, Miagao on August 18, 2017.

UPV, through the CFOS, was invited by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Foundation Manila for a joint partnership in the film screening of “Tsukiji Wonderland” in line with the celebration of the Japan-Philippines Friendship Month. The screening also gave an opportunity to share the culture of Japan to young Filipino audience. The documentary portrays the rich seafood and fishing culture and tradition of Japan.

Barrios is Kampeon ng Wika

The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (Commision on Filipino Language) awarded Dr. John Barrios as Kampeon ng Wika (Champion of Language) during the KWF Awards Night held on August 19, 2017 at SEAMEO Innotech, Quezon City.

Dr. Barrios was cited because of his contribution in propagating Western Visayan languages, literature and culture through his writings and literary criticisms of literary forms. This range from the indigenous epics to popular culture while at the same time highlighting the Hiligaynon language.

Aside from being an author, he is also an editor, translator, administrator and a patient teacher with intelligent and critical views. Significantly, he did his job as Komisyoner of KWF more than what is expected from a public servant. He served KWF beginning 2011 up to the present.

The Kampeon ng Wika is given to chosen individuals who disseminate knowledge about Filipino language and their local language in their respective fields. The KWF has given the same award to members of the media and literary organizations in the last two year. Currently, the KWF expands its search of deserving individuals and organizations in the field of culture, politics, music and the academe. UPV professors who have been given this award were Dr. Leoncio P. Deriada and Dr. Alicia P. Magos, both awarded in 2014.Dr. Barrios is currently Chair of the Division of Professional Education of the College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas. He also teaches Filipino in the Graduate Programs of UP Visayas and the UP High School in Iloilo.
