Manila, Philippines - Delegates from Cagayan de Oro and Iloilo City joined more than 300 leaders and experts from around the globe to participate in the 8th Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation on May 4-7, 2017 in Bonn, Germany.
Organized by ICLEI, the forum focused on urban resilience and adaptation to climate change challenges through sessions on localizing global frameworks, disaster risk reduction planning and policy, financing resilience, risk transfer and insurance, and mechanisms for measuring, reporting and accelerating action for resilience building, among others.
The University of the Philippines Visayas and the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for research, training and public service program collaborations on August 14, 2017 at the University of the Philippine Visayas, Iloilo City campus.
UPV Chancellor, Dr. Rommel A. Espinosa and ISAT-U Pres, Dr. Raul F. Muyong signed the MOU in behalf of their respective universties. Witnessing the signing were, CHED Commissioner Prospero De Vera, UP President Danilo Concepcion, UPV Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, Dr. Ricardo Babaran and ISAT-U Vice President Carmelo Ambut.
UPV and ISAT-U’s common interest in fostering innovative capability-building programs in fisheries and aquatic sciences can be a strategy for both universities to generate new knowledge, and sustain development of technologies.
In the MOU, both decided to to pursue the following: 1) develop collaborative activities in the furtherance of the common goals and objectives of UPV and ISAT-U; 2) to undertake collaborative graduate level instruction, research, training, and public service or extension programs; 3) to promote exchange of scientists and researchers for graduate level instruction, research, training and other related activities; 4) to strengthen the research capabilities of faculty and researchers through the cooperative use of materials and facilities; and, 5) to enhance the institutional capabilities of UPV and ISAT-U by collaborating in emerging trans-, inter-, and multi-disciplinary research programs of mutual interest.
Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Center-Western Visayas, one of the extension networks coordinated by UP Visayas’ Gender and Development Program was appointed as GAD Consultant of the newly-formed Iloilo City Council of Women (ICCW). Dr. Mary Barby P. Badayos-Jover, GDP Director and Coordinator of Ugsad GRC attended the Council’s oathtaking and induction ceremony on July 27, 2017 at the Iloilo City Hall. Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog served as the inducting officer during the ceremony.
The creation of the Iloilo City Council of Women is pursuant to Memorandum Circular 2006-125 issued by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) encouraging Local Government Units (LGUs) to organize the Local Council of Women (LCWs) to strengthen the women’s engagement and participation in all strata of local development.
Ugsad GRC is a coordinating body of all efforts and resources in providing gender-responsive services. It facilitates gender mainstreaming in national government agencies, non-government organizations, local government units, academic institutions and other entities. As GAD consultant of ICCW, Ugsad GRC will assist the council in the planning and formulation of its GAD-related policies, programs, activities and projects.
