IFPDS-CFOS Conducted a Training-Workshop on Fish Catch Monitoring

By: Genna D. Serofia

Twenty-seven fisherfolk of Brgy. Nasidman, Ajuy, Iloilo participated in a Training-Workshop on Fish Catch Monitoring conducted by the Institute of Fisheries Policy & Development Studies, College of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences on June 28, 2016 at Brgy. Nasidman, Ajuy. This public service activity is in response to the request of the local government unit of the Municipality of Ajuy in order to capacitate the fisherfolk of the said barangay in a community-based fish catch monitoring system and record keeping as well as to increase their level of awareness on the importance of community-based fisheries management.

It was noted and observed by the municipal agriculturist and the local fishers that fish catch over the years had been gradually improving especially in the said barangay wherein they perceived this as a result of the establishment of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the locality. However, this observation is not supported by scientific data as there is no database record of fish catch among the local fishers. This situation and the acknowledgment of LGU Ajuy on the importance and impact of marine ecosystem on community-based livelihood prompted them to request for a technical assistance to train their fishers on fish catch data gathering and monitoring.

This activity can serve as a “pilot episode” to a series of similar training-workshops that the institute hopes to conduct in the future since data on fish catch monitoring has always been one of the bottlenecks in fisheries management, thus addressing it will be a great contribution of the university to the local government units.

Dr. Harold Monteclaro, Prof. Joshua Regalado and Prof. Liberty Espectato served as lecturers with the assistance of Ms. Ruby Napata and Ms. Genna Serofia.
